In the collaboration of Sámi musician and poet Niillas Holmberg and saxophonist and composer Pauli Lyytinen, the audience hears about landscapes where water’s edge rises and lowers.
Valaan laulu, jumalten vaate! (The song of the Whale, the cloak of Gods!)
Where are we now, when poem yoik singer and saxophonist drag a mythical song from the waters to dry land; upon what waters? The world Niillas Holmberg and Pauli Lyytinen summon through verse, yoik, saxophone, percussion and live electronics, builds upon the simultaneous presence of centuries, of sleeping and waking.
Entä jos varttuu Järvellä? (But if one grows up by a lake?)
Niille vesille ei valaan laulu ei nouse. (Those waters does whales’ song not reach)
The musical world of the duo is based on channeling, improvisation and strong listening to one another. Their art is not a product called Naarattu laulu; it is a verb. The art is not the catch, but the act of catching something ancient from the misty waters with a net woven together.
The collaboration between Holmberg and Lyytinen began in 2021, and the duo has since performed in several art, literature and music events in Finland, Germany, Italy and Norway. Their working together has been allowed to mature and evolve through live performances. Their first album Naarattu laulu has been recorded and will be published in October 2025.
Holmberg’s poetry has been one of the projects founding elements ever since its beginning, and an anthology by Holmberg, Naarattu, will be published in conjunction with the album.
Kuinka vesi kantaakaan ääntä. (O how the water carries sound)
