Fredagar på Sibbe: Sointi Jazz Orchestra – Poems and Letters
Poems and Letters is a new concert piece written by Oskari Siirtola for Sointi Jazz Orchestra and a vocal soloist, who will premiére the work the autumn 2025. The work explores artistry during the early phases of modernism in the turn of the 20th century, through texts by great visual artists. Lyrics in the composition are fragments from letters, poems and other writings by Vincent van Gogh, Ellen Thesleff and Egon Schiele, among others.
Music-wise Poems and Letters combines modern jazz to influences from popular and art music. Rich tonalities, far-reaching textures and the spontaneous energy of jazz improvisation reflect the liberated colour palette and bold expression of the modernist artists. Singer-composer Selma Savolainen, whose album Horror Vacui was granted the Jazz-Emma prize in 2024, features as the vocalist for the piece.
Sointi Jazz Orchestra is known for its carefully curated concert experiences and open-minded take on new music. Since 2013 the orchestra has produced several intriguing premiéres on its own as well as in collaboration with both local and international soloists.
