Piano students from the Turku Conservatory and the Arts Academy celebrate Finnish music at the Sibelius Museum on Sunday, December 7, with the concerts “Kohti suomalaisen musiikin päivää – In anticipation of the Finnish Music Day.”
At 2:00 p.m., the program features Selim Palmgren’s 24 Piano Preludes, Op. 17, and at 3:00 p.m., Erkki Melartin’s 24 Piano Preludes, Op. 85.

The piano preludes of Selim Palmgren and Erkki Melartin represent the Finnish pianistic tradition of the 19th century and encompass the full range of human emotions. Palmgren’s collection of preludes, Op. 17, dates from 1907 and offers the listener a comprehensive view of the pianist-composer’s romantic virtuosity. Melartin’s preludes were published in 1920, but the complete work was performed for the first time only at the end of November 2025 by these same Turku piano students. The variety of styles and the imaginative character make the whole experience captivating.
