Andreas Helling, cello and Patrik Kleemola, guitar

In their concert, Andreas Helling and Patrik Kleemola bring together the relatively rare instrumental combination of cello and guitar. Mikko Heiniö’s work Mot Natten for cello and guitar is dedicated to the composer’s long-time collaborator and friend, Bo Carpelan. The piece draws both its inspiration and its title from Carpelan’s posthumous poetry collection.

Joaquin Rodrigo, one of the most significant Spanish composers of the 20th century, is best known for his Concierto de Aranjuez, particularly its beautiful Adagio movement. However, he also composed a substantial body of solo guitar works, including Tres Piezas Españolas, heard in this concert, which Rodrigo wrote at the request of the Spanish guitarist Andrés Segovia.

The concert concludes with Franz Schubert’s Arpeggione Sonata, one of the favourite works of both soloists. The arpeggione, developed in Vienna in the early 19th century, had six strings and frets like a guitar but was played with a bow, in the manner of a cello. It is therefore natural to hear the work in an arrangement for cello and guitar, as this combination aptly captures the intimate character of the piece.

Patrik Kleemola performs solo concerts, as a chamber musician, and as a soloist with symphony orchestras both in Finland and internationally. After winning the international II Guitaristival Competition in Turku, dedicated to Toru Takemitsu, and receiving prize placements at events such as the International Guitar Festival in Gargnano, he has appeared as a soloist not only in Finland but also in cities including London, Rome, Buenos Aires, Hiroshima, Athens, Dublin, Tallinn, Milan and Augsburg, as well as elsewhere in Europe, South America and Asia.

Kleemola’s repertoire includes classic guitar concertos by Rodrigo, Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Takemitsu, Ponce, Giuliani and Vivaldi, as well as concertos commissioned by him from Mikko Heiniö, Gerung and Maggio. He has performed these works as a soloist with ensembles such as the Orquesta Sinfónica de la Juventud Venezolana (El Sistema), Orchestra I Pomeriggi Musicali, the San Remo Symphony Orchestra, the Lecce Symphony Orchestra, the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, Uusinta Ensemble, Key Ensemble and Tampere Cappella. He is also an active chamber musician in a variety of ensembles.

Through his commissioning activity, Kleemola has expanded the guitar repertoire by more than sixty works, ranging from solo pieces to chamber music and guitar concertos. He serves as Lecturer in Guitar at the Turku Conservatory and regularly gives masterclasses in connection with concert tours, in recent years also in Buenos Aires (IUNA – Instituto Universitario Nacional del Arte), London (Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance), Augsburg (Leopold Mozart College of Music, University of Augsburg), as well as elsewhere in Japan, Italy, England, Estonia and Finland. Since 2014, Kleemola has been the Artistic Director of the Turku Guitar Festival, which he founded.
