Elli Vehmaa, cello & Antti Kujari, piano

Programme:

Jean Sibelius: Malinconia op. 20 (1900)

About the musicians

Cellist Elli Vehmaa began her studies at the Riihimäki Music Institute as a student of Eero Lepola. She has participated in masterclasses with, among others, Csilla Tuhkanen, Erkki Lahesmaa, Petja Kainulainen, Helen Lindén, and Kati Raitinen. Vehmaa serves as principal cellist of the Sigyn Sinfonietta and also performs with the Vivo Orchestra. She is currently studying at the Arts Academy of Turku University of Applied Sciences under Jukka Perksalo.

Antti Kujari is a pianist and composer from Turku who feels most at home with lesser-known twentieth-century repertoire. He began his piano studies at the Turku Conservatory as a student of Kalle Perksalo and now studies in Jukka Juvonen’s piano class at the Arts Academy of Turku University of Applied Sciences. In addition, he has attended masterclasses with, among others, Henri Sigfridsson, Tuija Hakkila, Antti Hotti, and Eero Heinonen. Kujari received an award at the Pianoaura competition in 2023, and his compositions have been performed at festivals as well as in three composition concerts.

Vehmaa and Kujari will perform a landmark work of Finnish cello literature, Sibelius’s Malinconia, composed after the death of his very young daughter. In its raw tragedy, the work is unmatched within the composer’s diverse output.

During the 2026 summer our museum comes to life on weekends with live music in the Sibelius Hall. With this, we wish to provide a possibility to experience our exhibitions a bit differently. Naturally, you may also have a seat in the concert hall and just enjoy the music.

Sommar Sibelius is a collaborative project between the Sibelius Museum and the Turku Arts Academy where music students perform music by Jean Sibelius during short pop-up concerts.

The Sommar Sibelius concerts are included in the admission price. You can also pay with the Museum Card! Find the whole series here!
