Aulis Sallinen is one of our most internationally renowned and respected composers. He is particularly known for his operas, of which The Red Line was performed in Turku in spring 2023. To celebrate the composer’s 90th birthday in April, an evening at the Sibelius Museum will present Sallinen’s career and his fascinating chamber music output. The String Quartet no 3, composed in 1969, was inspired by the folk tune of Kaustinen, Peltoniemi Hintrik’s Funeral March. In between the works, speakers will discuss the life and work of Aulis Sallinen.

Discussion:
conductor Okko Kamu
non-fiction writer, documentarist Pekka Hako

Okko Kamu is a conductor who, in addition to having conducted a lot of music by Sallinen, also performed at the première of the String Quartet nr. 3 in January 1970, as well as the premiere of the 4th string quartet in 1971, a work which will also be performed in the evening’s concert. Kamu is joined by non-fiction writer Pekka Hako in discussion on Sallinen’s compositions and their meaning to Finnish art music.
